Basic French Toast

Here is a french toast recipe that is so easy, it almost doesn't seem like it would work. Turns out, when you dip crusty french bread in this creamy mixture and pan fry it up to a buttery crispy, it is pure bliss. Click on the links to see our healthier (and often tastier) substitutions.

Basic French Toast

3 eggs (these are our new favorite kind to buy at the store)
2/3 cup milk or half and half (we use Ella's whole milk)
dash of salt
6 slices day old bread (french, italian, or sourdough) - best to slice a day ahead and let sit out to dry
2 Tblsp butter
*** additional options (vanilla (my favorite), orange zest, cinnamon)

Whisk together first 3 ingredients in a wide dish and add any additional flavorings. Place a few slices of bread in egg mixture and soak on each side for about 30 seconds. Place on a piece of wax paper. Heat skillet over medium heat and add a small amount of butter to coat bottom. Cook each slice of bread for a few minutes on each side, until golden brown. Again, I think it's best to pair a breakfast recipe like this with your favorite bacon or some yummy turkey suausage. Enjoy!
